Ruakaka School’s magnificent trip to Kelly Tarltons

The great big stingray glided by, slapping its wing on the strong plastic tank, spraying water everywhere. “Wow!” gasped the school. We spent about ten minutes watching the feeding of the stingrays, which was very interesting. They were amazing. They swam in circles around the lady, Ray, as she carefully stuffed halves of fish into their mouths. Sometimes they rose up out of the water, flapping their wings furiously to keep their mouths above the water so Ray could stuff some food down into their mouths. They obviously enjoyed that. We spent ages either watching the stingrays and fish or in the playroom.

Our next stop was the conveyor belt. They called it the shark tank. It had a neat conveyor belt that went round and round the shark tank. There were a number of sharks in there. They were quite interesting because of their long thin tails. There were other fish in there too. There were HUGE kingfish and other fish which were swimming over top of us. It was so neat.

After that we went upstairs to a rather dark room, which was full of big glass aquariums. They were full of piranhas and eels. There was also a tank that had two or three sea horses in it. They really stood out to me. They were swimming lazily around their tank, bobbing gently up and down in the water. Along their backs they had a fin which was rippling gently in the water. Their tails were thick and long, perfect for grabbing things. It was very similar to a Monkeys tail. Their mouth was so cool, it was long circular, which I thought especially attractive. Just right for browsing through the sand.

I liked Kelly Tarltons,I would have liked it if they had a turtle or maybe a few different sharks. It was a great trip and I am very grateful to the teachers who organised it.
